I don’t know about you but denim shorts might be one of my least favorite articles of clothing. This year I’m determined to find something that works for my body.
This is what I want in a short; something that doesn’t cut in at the waist, preferably doesn’t really touch my thighs, not too short, and of course, is flattering.
For size reference, I’m 5’2 and a 2/4. I generally have a hard time finding shorts because I carry a bit more weight in my thighs.
After trying 7 pairs of shorts, I’m happy to report I found a few pairs that work for me. Heck, I’m having a hard time figuring out which ones to return because I like them all so much. During my hunt for shorts, I found a couple more pairs that I would like to try. I’ll share those with you at the end.
Top Three:
Above are my top three, however, there are four from my try on session that I truly liked. Starting from left to right:
- Abercrombie Mid-Rise Boyfriend short: As soon as I tried these on, I knew I was going to like them. I just felt comfortable in them. They’re a mid-rise, 3 1/2 inseam, I chose the medium wash but they come in a handful of options. I like that there’s not too much distressing. Their a medium weight denim and feel like they won’t stretch out a ton. I went with a size 27 and have a little bit of room in the waist but I prefer that to having something that cuts in, even if they stretch slightly, I don’t want my shorts tight.
- AGOLDE Parker Vintage Loose fit cutoff : Why I liked them: Medium rise, not too much distressing, they didn’t touch my thighs and I loved the light(er) wash. The denim is a thicker weight which makes them a bit more flattering and they’re going to hold their shape. They’re a shorter than what I would normally go with at a 2 1/2inch inseam but since they’re not tight I feel comfortable in them. I’ve been wanting to try these for a while, I was wondering if they lived up to their high price tag and well, they do! They work for my curvy petite body and I feel good in them. They’re definitely an investment piece. After trying these, I want to try this high rise pair.
- AE 90’s Boyfriend Short– I saw these and new I wanted to try them. A major hint was that they had a boyfriend fit, to me that means they’re going to be a bit more generous in the thighs and they are! They have a “slouchier” fit, a high rise, and a 4inch inseam. They’re extremely comfortable. A thinner denim compared to the other two but stretchy and comfortable. I tried the 4 and 6 on in these and ultimately decided the 4 was the best fit. Keep in mind, I’m generally a 2/4. These come in a couple washes but I love this medium blue with the white distressing. So flattering.
- Not shown but very cute. Target Universal Thread High Rise Short. You can’t beat the price on these. They have a nice high rise, medium wash, 4 inch inseam and they’re comfortable! They have quite a bit of stretch. I will say these are the only pair that sat ON my thighs. They didn’t cut in but they did touch. Definitely worth trying. I got these in a 4 and they fit perfect.
Another look at the ones I liked:
The top I’m wearing in the pictures is so soft and comfortable, I love the color and it’s LONG. It could be worn with leggings or tucked in like I have here. I’m wearing a small but could have done an XS if I didn’t want a super oversized fit.
Sandals. I predict that these are the sandals of the season. They’re so pretty, come in two colors but the clear is my jam. I’m normally a 6.5/7 and went with a 7. I haven’t worn them out of the house yet (it’s too cold) but while wearing them around the house I haven’t found them to be uncomfortable. You can get a closet look at them here.
Here are the denim shorts I tried on and didn’t like:
I really wanted to like the Levi’s but they were way too tight on my legs. Immediately uncomfortable and I didn’t even want to give them a chance to stretch out. The Abercrombie “Mom” shorts were way too short, but I loved the high rise and I felt like they could have been great with a couple added inches in the inseam. The Target Wild Fable, they were too short, too much fabric in the front but kind of cut in at the waist and they cut in on ONE thigh? Old Navy boyfriend shorts, too short.
I find it ironic that a few of the 3 inch inseam shorts felt too short but the 2 1/2 felt just fine. That goes to show, you can’t just go off inseam, the fabric and fit are equally if not more important.
After trying these shorts, I found three more I would like to try. All brands that I’m familiar and would order a size 4 in:
